What is a birth chart?

It is not a prediction and it is not a personality test. It is a record of one particular minute of sky, seen from one particular place.

A birth chart — a natal chart, if you prefer the older word — is a diagram of where the sun, the moon and the planets stood at the moment you were born, drawn as they appeared from the exact spot on the earth where you arrived.

That is the whole definition. Everything else — every sign, house and aspect you have read about — is a way of describing what is in that diagram.

Why it is not the same as your star sign

Your star sign — your sun sign — answers one question: which of the twelve zodiac segments the sun happened to be sitting in on your birthday. That is one fact about one body. A horoscope column takes that single fact and writes to everyone who shares it, which is roughly six hundred million people.

A birth chart has considerably more in it:

• Ten bodies — the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, each in its own sign and at its own degree
• Twelve houses — the areas of life each body is operating in, which depend entirely on your birth time
• The aspects — the geometric angles the bodies make to one another, which is where most of the actual character of a chart lives
• The angles — your Ascendant (Rising sign) and Midheaven, fixed by the hour and the horizon of your birthplace

Two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, share a sun sign and almost nothing else. The moon may have changed sign. The Ascendant certainly will have — it moves through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours. Every house placement shifts with it.

What the parts actually mean

Signs

A sign describes the manner in which a planet operates. Mars in Aries and Mars in Libra both govern drive and conflict; one goes straight at it, the other negotiates. Same function, different style.

Houses

A house describes the area of life where that function shows up. Mars in the sixth house puts your drive into work and routine; Mars in the seventh puts it into partnership. Houses are the part most people have never seen, because they cannot be worked out from a birthday alone.

Aspects

An aspect is the angle between two bodies, and it describes how two parts of you get along. A trine (120°) is an easy channel — a talent that runs without effort and can therefore be neglected. A square (90°) is friction, and friction is where most people's actual development happens. Aspects are why a chart reads like a person rather than a list.

How a chart is calculated

Real chart calculation is astronomy, not interpretation. It needs three inputs:

1. Date of birth — fixes the positions of the slow-moving bodies
2. Time of birth — fixes the Moon precisely, and fixes the Ascendant, the Midheaven and every house cusp
3. Place of birth — supplies the latitude and longitude the sky is viewed from, and the time zone the clock was running on

The place matters more than people expect. Historic daylight saving is a genuine trap: Britain ran double summer time during the Second World War, and many countries have changed their rules repeatedly since. A chart calculated against the wrong offset can be a full sign out on the Ascendant, which changes the reading substantially.

What you can reasonably expect from reading yours

Honestly: recognition rather than revelation. The useful experience of a full chart reading is usually finding language for something you already half-knew — a tension you had never named, a pattern you assumed was a personal failing rather than a structural feature.

What it will not do is tell you what to do. Anyone selling certainty out of a birth chart is selling something other than astrology.
