You do not know your birth time

Most people do not, and a good number who think they do are working from a family story. Here is what is lost, what is not, and where the hour is usually written down.

It is the single most common obstacle to getting a real birth chart, and it stops a lot of people before they start. It should not. Most of the chart survives a missing hour intact — and the part that does not can often be recovered with twenty minutes of looking in the right place.

What the time changes, and what it does not

Without a birth time you still get most of the chart. Every planet is still in its correct sign, and the aspects between them — which carry most of a chart's character — are unaffected, with the single exception of the Moon on a fast-moving day.

What you lose is the houses. Specifically:

• Your Ascendant (Rising sign), which moves through a full sign roughly every two hours
• Your Midheaven, and with it the career and public-standing axis
• Every house placement — which area of life each planet is operating in
• Precise Moon degree, and on a sign-change day, occasionally the Moon's sign itself

That is a real loss. It is not a fatal one.

The honest method: a solar chart

When the hour is missing, the standard professional approach is a solar chart — the chart is drawn with your Sun placed on the Ascendant instead of guessing an unknown horizon. Signs, degrees and aspects are all genuine. The house-dependent material is left out rather than invented.

This matters, because the alternative is what a lot of software quietly does: default the time to 12:00 noon and print an Ascendant anyway. That Ascendant is a coin toss dressed as a fact, and everything built on it inherits the error.

Where the time is actually recorded

Before settling for a solar chart, it is worth twenty minutes of looking. The time is written down more often than people assume.

United Kingdom

The short birth certificate does not carry a time. The full (long-form) certificate records it for multiple births, and for many single births registrars entered it anyway. Order a full certified copy from the General Register Office. Hospital maternity notes, where they survive, are the other reliable source.

United States

Most states record the time of birth on the certificate held by the state vital records office. The hospital's own copy — often a keepsake certificate given to parents — frequently shows it too.

Elsewhere and everywhere

• Baby books and hospital wristbands, which parents keep far more often than they remember
• Newspaper birth announcements, which sometimes carried the hour
• Religious records — baptism and naming registers occasionally note it
• Anyone who was in the building. Ask before the memory is gone; this is the usual reason people never find out.

If a family story is all you have

"Just after breakfast" or "the middle of the night" is not nothing. A two-hour window narrows the Ascendant to one or two candidate signs, and an astrologer can tell you which house placements are stable across that window and which are not.

What you should not do is pick a plausible-sounding time and treat it as fact. A chart built on an invented hour reads convincingly and is wrong in a way you cannot detect from the inside.
